Rather than a single specimen, this plate gathers a crab, a flying fish, an insect, and a flower into one seascape, a composition typical of illustrated natural history in the 1830s. It appeared in the third volume of the *Dictionnaire d'histoire naturelle des phénomènes de la nature*, edited by the entomologist Félix Édouard Guérin-Méneville and published in Paris in 1835. The drawing is credited to Acarie and the engraving to Pfitzer, and the hand-applied color means tints can vary from copy to copy. Plates like this aimed to bring the wonders of the natural world to general readers who would never see such creatures firsthand.
