Three flyingfish share this plate, drawn by P. Oudart and lithographed by C. Motte, and it appears as plate 111, opposite page 68 of volume 7 of the fish volumes in the collected works of the comte de Lacépède, edited by Georges Cuvier. Lacépède's *Histoire naturelle des poissons* was first published between 1798 and 1803, and this late-1820s edition brought the series back into print. The flyingfish's enlarged pectoral fins let it glide above the surface for considerable distances, and the hand coloring helps set off the fins' delicate structure.
