Made in 1870 to advertise Thos. J. Myer & Co., a Baltimore seafood business selling fresh oysters, this lithograph is a plainly commercial piece. Baltimore was one of the great oyster markets of the nineteenth century, drawing on the Chesapeake Bay beds and shipping shellfish to towns across the region. The print came from A. Hoen & Co., a Baltimore lithographic firm that produced advertising sheets, trade cards and labels like this one. Its display lettering and eye-catching image show how businesses of the period relied on printed pictures to draw customers before modern magazine and newspaper advertising took hold.
