Few advertisements show the tobacco trade's use of premiums as plainly as this card, which promises one of fifty fish from American waters in every package of Virginia Bright cigarettes. Allen & Ginter of Richmond, Virginia, packed collectible cards like this into its cigarettes to encourage repeat purchases and to build loyalty among smokers. The color lithograph was printed in New York by Lindner, Eddy & Clauss, a firm that produced many colorful advertising cards of the period. Because collectors often tried to complete full sets, the series doubled as an early form of hobby collecting.
