Its slogan, "Know the world you live in," invites working people to join free informal study groups run by the Workers Education Project in New York State. The poster was printed in silkscreen, a method the Federal Art Project's poster division used to make inexpensive, large-run public notices during the Depression. The project was part of the Works Progress Administration's adult education work, which aimed to give laborers and their families access to civic and economic discussion outside formal schools. A date stamped on the back of the board, June 1937, shows it was still in circulation about a year after it was designed.
