Few posters from the WPA's adult education work announce a neighborhood study group as directly as this one, which invites residents to register for an informal class at Henry Street Settlement on New York's Lower East Side. Lillian Wald, a nurse, founded the settlement in 1893 to offer health care, social services and education to immigrant families in the area. The silkscreen print dates to 1936, when the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project used the inexpensive medium to produce public notices. Its sponsorship by the New York Board of Education ties it to the wider Depression-era effort to give working adults access to learning.
