Advertising a 1936 exhibition of Katherine Milhous's work for the Index of American Design, this color woodcut poster comes from the Federal Art Project, one of the Works Progress Administration's arts programs. The Index was a nationwide effort to record American folk and decorative objects such as furniture, textiles and household tools through careful drawings and paintings. Milhous, a Philadelphia artist who later became known for her children's books, was part of that Depression-era work. The poster's bold, flat shapes reflect how WPA artists used printmaking to create inexpensive public notices.
