A silkscreen poster from 1936 announces an Ohio exhibition of the Index of American Design, a Federal Art Project initiative that paid artists to record American decorative and folk objects in carefully rendered watercolors. The print's sponsor line ties it to the Federal Art Project's Ohio program, one of many state branches that promoted local art during the Depression. Silkscreen was a relatively inexpensive method, which made it well suited to the WPA's large runs of posters for community venues. The date stamped on the back, November 1938, marks when the poster was filed or catalogued, not when it was printed.
