Few posters in the WPA collection advertise an exhibition of drawings, and this one stands out for its subject matter: the show featured renderings of American folk objects, including weather vanes and items associated with Native American craft. The drawings came from the Index of American Design, a Federal Art Project effort that trained artists to record everyday decorative objects in precise watercolor and gouache so that the nation's material culture would be preserved. The poster itself was printed in silkscreen, a technique the WPA poster program used widely because it allowed inexpensive runs in bold flat color. A September 1938 date stamp on the back shows it was still circulating in the archive's files two years after its exhibition year.
