The first thing that sets this poster apart is its subject: a regional exhibition of works by artists in New Jersey and New York State, produced under the Federal Art Project, one of the arms of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The 1936 date places it in the years when the Federal Art Project was putting artists to work on murals, easel paintings, sculpture and graphic design, and when silkscreen was emerging as an inexpensive way to produce bright, bold posters for public events. The poster's record notes that the sculptor Maurice Glickman is associated with the work, and a stamp on the back dates the print to December 1937, a reminder that these posters were often printed in runs and circulated well after their original event.
