Crewel embroidery, rendered in watercolor, is the subject of this 1936 silkscreen poster for an exhibition in Boston, Massachusetts. The Index of American Design, a Federal Art Project unit, paid artists to document surviving American decorative arts, including colonial-era textiles, by painting them with close attention to stitch, color, and pattern. Posters like this one were printed by the Federal Art Project's silkscreen workshops to advertise its events and exhibitions. Crewel work, with its wool yarn on linen, was a common household craft in New England, so the subject links the poster to the region's own history. The date stamped on the back, January 1939, falls several years after the exhibition was announced.
