This 1941 silkscreen poster advertises the Exhibition Index of American Design, a project of the Federal Art Project under the Works Progress Administration. The project cataloged and promoted examples of American decorative and folk objects, and its exhibitions were meant to show ordinary craft and industrial design as a serious part of national culture. The subject tags link this copy to exhibitions at the Chicago Historical Society during the 1940s, a period when WPA artists turned out many posters for museums and galleries. A handwritten date of 12/30/41 on the back suggests when the print was made or dated, and the design shows the bold flat color typical of the WPA silkscreen workshops.
