Few posters of this period take a piece of needlework as their central image, and this one puts a crewel embroidery front and center. Crewel work, stitched in wool yarn on linen or cotton, was a favored decorative craft in colonial New England, where it appeared on bed hangings, coverlets, and wall pieces. The WPA Index of American Design, a Depression-era Federal Art Project running from 1935 to 1942, sought to record such handmade objects, many of which were then at risk of being lost. Its exhibition materials helped bring attention to these everyday textiles as serious American art.
