Yonkers, New York, is the place this poster sets out to serve, and its plain call to "register now" shows one of the less familiar corners of the New Deal. Printed in silkscreen, it was a joint product of the New York State Education Department and the Works Progress Administration, whose adult education program offered free courses to residents, many of them out of work during the Depression. The WPA's Federal Art Project produced posters like this one, and the silkscreen process it championed made them inexpensive to reproduce in quantity. The back of this copy carries a February 1939 date stamp, a reminder that posters were often kept and handled long after their first printing.
