Chicago's Board of Education sponsored this silkscreen poster, which invites adults to enroll in free neighborhood art classes. Printed in 1936, it reflects the Depression-era push to bring cultural programs to ordinary working people, a goal shared by the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project. Silkscreen was a favored method of the WPA poster units because it was inexpensive to produce in quantity and allowed flat, bold color that could be read from a distance on a street or in a store window. The date stamped on the back, May 1937, shows the poster was still being handled and filed well after its original printing.
