This silkscreen poster from 1936 advertises free adult classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, and photography in New York, a pitch that spoke directly to an era of mass unemployment. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists during the Depression and ran community art instruction alongside its creative work. The Federal Art Project's poster division was known for using silkscreen, a relatively inexpensive method that let artists produce bold, flat-color designs in quantity for public notices. A 1939 date stamp on the back shows the sheet was still in circulation or in storage several years after it was printed.
