Few posters from the Federal Art Project's New York program advertised art classes for children as directly as this one, which promotes free summer instruction in drawing, painting, metal craft and sculpture pottery. The poster dates to 1936, when the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal agency that employed artists during the Depression, ran community art centers and classes across the city. Silkscreen printing, a technique the Federal Art Project's poster unit used to produce inexpensive, bold images, gives the design its flat, vivid color. A date stamp on the back, April 9, 1938, records when the print was processed, a small clue to how these posters moved through the agency's files.
