Free classes in painting and drawing for children are the subject of this New York City poster, a color silkscreen issued under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration. The Project was part of the New Deal's effort to put artists back to work during the Depression, and it ran art instruction and community programs across the city. Its poster unit used silkscreen to produce bright, inexpensive announcements that could be printed in quantity and posted in neighborhoods. The poster shows how public arts education for young people was promoted in the late 1930s.
