Hundreds of New Yorkers could take free classes in drawing, painting, weaving, lithography, and sculpture, and this silkscreen poster announces that offer. It was produced under the Federal Art Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists during the Depression and ran art instruction for adults across the city. Silkscreen was a relatively new technique for posters at the time, and the WPA poster units used it to make inexpensive, bold graphics for public notices. The date stamped on the back, February 1938, shows the sheet was still in circulation or in use about two years after it was first printed.
