Few posters from the period crowd so many crafts onto one sheet: this one promotes a school offering pottery, modeling, weaving, painting, drawing, woodcarving, sewing and needlework under a single heading. Issued under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, it reflects the adult education classes offered across New York State during the Depression, when such courses gave unemployed people structured activity and a chance to learn a trade or pastime. The silkscreen process used here was one the federal poster division relied on heavily, since it allowed inexpensive runs of bold, flat color for public display.
