This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises a summer program of sculpture, pottery, woodcarving, modeling, and crafts, sponsored by the Federal Art Project in New York State. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed artists during the Depression and ran free community art classes alongside its artwork. Its poster unit used the stencil-based silkscreen process, which allowed inexpensive runs of bold, flat color and gave the project a distinctive graphic style. The poster is a reminder that the New Deal treated arts instruction as public work, offering hands-on training to people who might not otherwise have access to it.
