A poster advertising a Federal Art Project exhibition of paintings, this piece belongs to the public art program of the Works Progress Administration. The Federal Art Project, which ran from 1935 to 1943, employed artists who had lost work during the Great Depression, and it produced posters, murals, and easel paintings for schools, libraries, and community events. Its poster workshops favored bold, simplified shapes and lettering meant to be read quickly from a street corner. The gallery files this under fruit and vegetable labels, but its real subject is the New Deal's effort to put artists to work and bring art to ordinary audiences.
