Designed for the Federal Art Gallery in Boston, this poster announces an exhibition of oil paintings in the flat, bold color of silkscreen printing. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, used posters like this to publicize its gallery shows during the Depression, and the method let artists make many inexpensive copies. A date stamp on the back reads March 20, 1937, roughly a year after the poster's listed date, a reminder that these works often stayed in circulation well beyond their original purpose.
