The subject here is an exhibition of national prints at the Federal Art Gallery in Boston, announced in a silkscreen poster from 1936. Its design shows printmaking equipment, a detail that points to the medium the show celebrated. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, used silkscreen because it was inexpensive and well suited to bold, flat color, and it helped put a large body of public art into circulation during the Depression. A date stamp on the back, August 31, 1937, records when the poster was handled after its original printing.
