Promoting a painting exhibition at the Federal Art Gallery on Beacon Street, this poster is set apart by its Boston address, on the street that runs along Beacon Hill past the Massachusetts State House. It was produced under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, which from 1935 to 1943 employed artists on murals, easel paintings and public posters. Many of these posters were made by silkscreen, a low-cost method that allowed designers to print bold flat color in multiple copies. The result is a useful record of how New Deal arts programs advertised their own exhibitions to the public.
