A poster advertising an exhibition of women painters at the Federal Art Gallery in Boston stands out among the city's color prints for its purpose: it promotes a show rather than depicting a place or person. It was produced under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, which employed artists during the Depression and made posters for exhibitions, concerts, and public health campaigns across the country. Many of these posters were made by screen printing, which used flat, bold areas of color and lettering that could be read quickly from a street corner. Worth noticing is how the design balances simple shapes with the text, so that the exhibition announcement itself becomes part of the artwork.
