This poster announces a specific opening: the WPA Federal Art Gallery in the Calumet Building in Newark, with a November 15 date and the State of New Jersey named as sponsor. It was printed in silkscreen, a stencil process the Federal Art Project used to produce inexpensive, bold posters in quantity. Dated 1936, it reflects the program's effort to bring art exhibitions to ordinary city residents, not only to collectors and museum-goers. A later stamp on the back records a January 1939 date, showing how long such posters stayed in circulation.
