A poster announcing a general exhibition in Boston, running April 14 to May 15, makes it a record of a specific spring show rather than a generic civic notice. It was produced under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, the New Deal program that employed artists during the Great Depression and included a poster division. Those posters were often printed by silkscreen in bold, flat areas of color, a method chosen partly for its speed and low cost. Its color and lettering reflect the program's goal of bringing art into public streets, not only into galleries.
