A color poster advertising an exhibition of mural studies, produced under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, sets this piece apart from the other Boston prints on the board. The Federal Art Project (1935 to 1943) gave unemployed artists paid work, and its poster units often used the silkscreen process, which made bold, flat color practical for public notices. Posters like this one carried the sketches and planning work behind large murals meant for schools, post offices and other public buildings, so they show how the artists imagined those commissions before they were painted.
