At 50 Beacon Street, the poster advertises an exhibition staged under the Federal Art Project, the arts division of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists during the Great Depression from 1935 to 1943. Federal Art Project poster units across the country turned out inexpensive, eye-catching silkscreen prints to announce shows, concerts, and public events, and the color-print technique gave them bold flat shapes that were easy to read from the street. Work like this kept many artists paid while bringing art to ordinary city audiences, and it is now valued as a record of both New Deal cultural policy and the graphic style of the 1930s.
