Few posters from the Illinois project name a location as plainly as this one: 433 East Erie Street in Chicago, where a sculpture exhibition ran from April 10 to May 12, 1939. The Federal Art Project, one of the Works Progress Administration's New Deal programs, employed artists, teachers and craftsmen during the Depression and used posters like this to publicize its exhibitions and classes. Printed as a color silkscreen, the poster reflects the technique the project's workshops used to produce bold graphics in quantity. A date stamp on the back reads April 29, 1939, which falls partway through the exhibition's run.
