Promising free instruction in painting and drawing, this silkscreen poster was produced under the Federal Art Project, one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration. The Project's poster division used the stencil-based silkscreen process to make inexpensive, eye-catching notices for public events and services, and this one advertises the Art Teaching Division's classes in New York in 1936. The Works Progress Administration, which ran from 1935 to 1943, employed unemployed artists, many of whom taught in community centers and schools. A date stamp on the back, February 9, 1938, shows the sheet was filed or circulated well after it was printed.
