This silkscreen poster announces sculpture classes for children in New York State, run by the Art Teaching Division of the Federal Art Project. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed artists during the Depression, and its poster units used silkscreen to produce bold, flat color in quantity at low cost. Posters like this one spread word of public art programs to local communities, so the image also shows how the government tried to keep both artists and young people working and learning. A date stamp on the back, April 9, 1938, shows the sheet was still in use about two years after it was printed.
