Hull-House, the Chicago settlement house that Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr founded on the Near West Side in 1889, is the focus of this 1938 silkscreen poster advertising free community classes in painting, sculpture, and pottery. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored the notice as part of its effort to employ artists during the Depression while bringing art instruction to working-class neighborhoods. Silkscreen was a fairly new technique for public posters, and its flat, bold color suited announcements meant to be read quickly from a street or a bulletin board. The "Register now" line shows the poster's practical purpose: getting residents to sign up.
