This silkscreen invites Iowans to join an art center association offering free exhibits, free classes and free lectures. Issued under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration in 1936, it reflects the New Deal effort to bring art into everyday community life during the Depression. WPA poster shops often used silkscreen because it was inexpensive to run in small batches and suited bold, flat color. A date of May 1, 1939, stamped on the back shows the sheet stayed in circulation or in files well after it was printed.
