This 1936 poster announces free summer art classes for high school students, a notice that would have been pinned up in schools, libraries, and community spaces. It was printed in silkscreen, a method the Federal Art Project's New York poster workshops adopted because it was cheap, reproducible in bright flat color, and well suited to large runs of public notices. The Works Progress Administration, later renamed the Work Projects Administration, put unemployed artists to work on projects like this one, and its art programs also aimed to bring instruction to young people during the Depression. The poster is a useful record of how the federal arts projects reached ordinary communities with both jobs and education.
