The poster's blunt message, that this is an adult world and its problems are up to you, is paired with a free enrollment call for a federal adult school in Columbus, Ohio. Dated April 1938 on the reverse, it was made under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, which employed artists to design posters for public agencies during the Depression. Its flat, bold bands of color reflect the silkscreen process the program favored for inexpensive printing in quantity. Federal adult classes of this period offered basic literacy, citizenship and job skills to adults who had left school early.
