Few posters from the Depression era made the case for schooling as plainly as this 1938 silkscreen, which urges adults to "learn free" at federal adult schools in Columbus, Ohio. Its road-as-metaphor framing, with success waiting at the end of a course, reflects the Works Progress Administration's adult education programs, which offered free classes in reading, writing, and job skills to people whose schooling had been interrupted by hard times. The Federal Art Project produced posters like this one, and the silkscreen process let designers print bold, flat color in multiples at low cost. Note the stamped date on the back, which places the work in the spring of 1938.
