Admission was free for this 1936 silkscreen announcement of a public forum in New York City, held in cooperation with the city's Board of Education. Forums like this were part of the Works Progress Administration's broader effort to bring lectures and discussion to ordinary residents during the Depression, when many people had time but little money for entertainment. The poster's bold flat color and simple lettering reflect the silkscreen methods the federal poster program used in New York, where artists turned out inexpensive, eye-catching notices for public events.
