Few pictures on this board show the Federal theater Project at work as plainly as this 1936 silkscreen poster for *Battle Hymn*, a New York play by Michael Blankfort and Michael Gold about John Brown. The Federal theater Project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created to put actors, writers and stage crews to work during the Depression, and its posters came from the same federal print units that produced the wider WPA poster series. The play centers on Brown's 1859 raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, an attack that inflamed sectional tensions and helped push the country toward the Civil War.
