*Battle Hymn*, a 1936 epic drama by Michael Gold and Michael Blankfort, takes its audience back to the years before the Civil War, when the country's divisions over slavery were tearing toward open conflict. This poster was produced under the Federal theater Project, a New Deal program run through the Works Progress Administration that put unemployed theater workers to work staging plays for public audiences. Its subject line also places the production in California, one of many regional stagings the project supported during the 1930s. Posters like this one were meant to sell tickets with bold graphics, and they now document how the federal theater program promoted serious drama to a broad public during the Depression.
