The subject sets this poster apart from others in the Federal theater Project series: it advertises a drama of "hurricane country," written by Theodore Pratt, a Florida writer. The Federal theater Project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 to employ theater workers during the Depression and to bring low-cost plays to ordinary audiences. Its posters were typically silkscreened in bold, flat color, like this one, so they could be printed cheaply and read quickly from a distance. The date stamped on the back, June 1939, falls the same year Congress cut off the project's funding, which marks how brief its run was.
