Few entries in the Works Progress Administration's poster output capture the Federal theater Project's lighter side as directly as this silkscreen advertisement for a vaudeville bill of nine acts, promising comedy, singing and dancing. The Federal theater Project was one of several arts programs created under the Works Progress Administration to put unemployed actors, writers, designers and stagehands back to work during the Great Depression. Its New York productions drew large audiences with low ticket prices, and its posters were printed by artists on the federal rolls using the silkscreen method, which gave them flat, bold color. The verso date stamp of June 4, 1937, records when this copy was processed into the Library of Congress collection.
