The Statue of Liberty is the focal point of this 1936 silkscreen poster, which pairs the national symbol with the title of the Federal theater Project's production of *It Can't Happen Here*. The play adapted Sinclair Lewis's 1935 novel about a demagogue who wins the American presidency and steers the country toward dictatorship. Federal theater productions were staged in cities across the country, and their posters were made by artists working for the Works Progress Administration. Placing the statue beside a warning about fascism at home was a pointed choice for its moment.
