Few posters on this board announce a farce about a horse eating a hat, which the Federal theater Project staged at Maxine Elliott's theater in New York. The play draws on Eugène Labiche's French comedy *The Italian Straw Hat*, a story of mishaps built around a missing hat. The Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, employed out-of-work theater people during the Depression and staged productions for low-cost audiences across the city. Ward Theodore's silkscreen design is a good example of the bold, flat color the WPA used to advertise its shows.
