Charlotte Chorpenning's stage version of Hans Christian Andersen's tale of a vain emperor and two swindlers was staged for young audiences by the Federal theater Project, the New Deal program that put unemployed actors, writers, and designers to work during the Depression. Chorpenning, a playwright known for children's theater, wrote plays that were lively and easy for children to follow. The silkscreen poster was made by the Works Progress Administration's poster division, which used the cheap, bold color of screen printing to advertise shows across the country. Its 1936 date places it in the Federal theater's busiest years for children's productions.
