Salem, Massachusetts, is the place this poster advertises, with a ten-act all-star vaudeville bill presented in 1938. The Federal theater Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, created to put out-of-work actors, musicians, and stagehands back to work during the Depression, and its local units staged everything from drama to variety shows for audiences who could rarely afford commercial theater tickets. The poster was printed by silkscreen, a method the Federal Art Project used to produce inexpensive, bold color posters that could be displayed quickly in public spaces.
