This poster advertises a production in Holyoke, Massachusetts, one of the mill cities of the Connecticut River valley, which sets it apart from the many Federal theater Project posters that promote shows in New York and other large cities. The play, *I Want a Policeman*, is a mystery drama by Rufus King, a writer known for detective fiction. The Federal theater Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal agency that put unemployed actors, designers, and stagehands to work between 1935 and 1939. The record credits Lazarus Milton, and the silkscreen color printing reflects the low-cost methods the project used to get its posters onto local streets.
