Springfield, Illinois, is where Abraham Lincoln practiced law and raised his family before leaving for Washington in 1861, and this 1938 poster advertises a stage production set in that city's history, John Hunter Booth's dramatic chronicle *Created Equal*. The title echoes the Declaration of Independence and Lincoln's own words. The Federal theater Project, a New Deal program that employed out-of-work actors, writers and technicians, sponsored the show, and the Federal Art Project's silkscreen unit produced the artwork. Posters like this were printed by hand in small runs, and their flat, bold color and simple lettering reflect the quick, inexpensive methods the WPA art units used to reach local audiences.
