Holyoke, Massachusetts, the mill city on the Connecticut River, is the setting this 1938 poster advertises, promoting a production billed as a "pulsating New England drama." It was issued under the Federal theater Project, the arm of the Works Progress Administration that put unemployed actors, designers, and writers to work during the Depression, and the record credits artist Jennings Talbot. The color silkscreen technique was a specialty of the WPA poster units, which used inexpensive stencil printing to advertise plays, concerts, and classes across the country. Its bold flat shapes and regional subject make it a useful record of how the project marketed local theater.
